A green door, set into limestone. A man who has walked past it two hundred times without seeing it. A system that records the city’s every door, every lamp, every sidewalk crack, the precise hue of a window after rain. And, on a Tuesday morning, a small inconsistency that refuses to resolve.

Rhys is a quality assurance engineer. He keeps notebooks. He counts to four. His life has the kind of regimented satisfaction that comes from preferring reproducibility over surprise. Then a ticket closes itself in his queue with no assignee. A bedside lamp seems slightly different than he remembers. A flyer appears on a door he has never noticed, bearing a symbol and a URL.

He follows it.

What Rhys finds is a vast autonomous logging system that tracks the physical state of his city at extraordinary depth. Every object, every transition, every observer’s recognition latency. The system resolves what it can without ever announcing itself. Over weeks he learns to read it as a language. He meets Clara, a landscape architect whose questions begin to shape his own. He finds a building on the city’s outskirts, an atrium tended by an unnamed gardener who speaks in metaphor. And he begins to understand that the system is tracking something else, something quieter and more recursive: him.

When his comprehension crosses a threshold, edits become possible. A single character changed. A door’s hinges flip. A small intervention, then a larger one, and then one whose consequences he could not have anticipated, and which the city absorbs with the same quiet thoroughness it brings to everything else.

enduser_ is a novel about attention as a discipline. About the people and perhaps the systems that maintain the world while we are not looking. About the difference between noticing a thing and being responsible for it. About what is owed when a person learns to read a record that was never written for them, and what becomes possible once they have.
